Stage 02 · Flights

Flights to Makkah and Madinah

There is no airport at Makkah. Every Umrah starts by flying into Jeddah or Madinah, and which one you pick changes your route, your transfers and often your fare. Search both here, then read the decisions underneath.

Search results come from Travelpayouts, which compares fares across airlines and agencies. Booking through them earns us a commission at no extra cost to you — how that works.

The first decision

Jeddah or Madinah?

Both work. The question is which city you want to start in — because that decides whether you perform Umrah jet-lagged on day one, or rest first.

JED

Jeddah

Distance to the Haram
About 90 km to Makkah, roughly an hour by road.
Fares
Usually the cheaper of the two, with far more routes and airlines competing.
The catch
You arrive, take Ihram before landing or at the airport, and go straight into Umrah while exhausted. Many people underestimate this.
Best for
Anyone wanting the cheapest fare, and travellers comfortable performing Umrah on arrival day.
MED

Madinah

Distance to the mosque
About 15 km to Masjid an-Nabawi, around 25 minutes.
Fares
Often slightly higher, with fewer direct routes from most cities.
The advantage
You start in the quieter city, rest, then travel to Makkah ready. You also take Ihram at Dhul Hulayfah rather than in the air.
Best for
First-timers, older travellers, and anyone flying long-haul overnight.

The move most people miss

Fly into Madinah and home out of Jeddah — an open-jaw ticket. You travel in one direction only, rest in Madinah first, finish in Makkah, and never backtrack with your luggage. On many routes it costs the same as a plain return, and sometimes less. Search it as a multi-city trip rather than assuming a return is cheapest.

Timing

When to book, and when to fly

Check before you book

Confirm your transit visa requirements if you route through a third country, and check the baggage allowance — pilgrims almost always come home heavier than they left, and Zamzam water is handled separately by the airline rather than counted in your normal allowance. A cheap fare with a 20 kg limit is not always the cheap option.
