Independent Umrah

Umrah, booked by you.

You do not need an agency to perform Umrah. The permit is issued to you directly, the flights and hotels are on the same booking sites you already use, and the whole trip is eight decisions long. This is how to make them.

Why bother

The package price is not the hotel price.

An agency buys the same rooms and the same seats you can, then adds a margin for arranging it. That margin is the entire saving — and for a lot of people it is money well spent. For everyone else, here is what you get back.

You choose the hotel

Packages sort by price band. You can sort by the thing that actually matters — how far you walk to the Haram at 3am — and pay for exactly that.

You choose the dates

Group departures run on fixed windows. Booking yourself, a shift of three days either way often moves the airfare by several hundred ringgit.

You keep the margin

Roughly a quarter of a mid-range package price is arrangement. Do the arranging and that stays with you — or upgrades your hotel by a tier.

When an agency is the better answer

If it is your first time and nobody travelling with you has been before, if you are taking elderly parents who will need help at the airport and in the crowds, or if you want a scholar with the group for the manasik — book a package. This site will still be useful for understanding what you are paying for, but it is not trying to talk you out of a service that genuinely earns its fee.

The route

Eight decisions, in the order you make them.

This is not a checklist someone invented — it is the sequence the trip forces on you. Each stage locks in the one after it, which is why booking hotels before you have a permit is how people lose deposits.

01

Permit and visa

Check you are eligible, then book the Umrah permit yourself through Nusuk, the official Saudi platform.

Most nationalities can perform Umrah on an ordinary tourist e-visa. No agency needs to sponsor you, and nobody can book the permit on your behalf that you could not book yourself.

02

Flights

Decide between Jeddah and Madinah as your entry point, and whether to fly open-jaw.

Flying into Madinah and home out of Jeddah frequently costs the same as a return, and saves you carrying luggage back across the country.

03

Makkah hotel

The decision that shapes the whole trip: how far you are willing to walk, five times a day, in a crowd.

Distance beats star rating. Every extra 500 metres is roughly ten minutes each way — and after Fajr, when you are tired, that is the number you will remember, not the thread count.

04

Madinah hotel

Cheaper than Makkah, and the central district is small enough that almost everything is walkable.

Within about 400 metres of the Nabawi gates, paying more buys you a view and a shorter lift queue — not better access. Spend the difference on Makkah instead.

05

Getting around

Airport transfers at both ends, and the high-speed rail between the two cities.

The Haramain train runs Makkah to Madinah in about two and a half hours and is booked directly on its own site. It is the cheapest and easiest leg of the entire trip.

06

Staying connected

An eSIM installed before you leave home, so you land already online.

Install it at home and switch it on when you land. Queuing for a local SIM at Jeddah arrivals after an overnight flight is the worst possible time to be solving a problem.

07

Travel insurance

Effectively required for the visa, so treat it as a step rather than an upsell.

Check the policy covers medical repatriation. That is the clause that matters at this age range and in these crowds, and it is the one budget policies most often exclude.

08

Ziarah and side trips

The historical sites around both cities, plus Taif or Jeddah if you have a spare day.

Book ziarah after you arrive, not before. Nearly everyone underestimates how tired the first two days are, and a prepaid tour on day two is a tour you will resent.

Where the guides are

The cost calculator is live now. The eight stage guides are being written one at a time, starting with the two hotel guides — they are the ones that change what you actually pay. Nothing here is a placeholder for a page that will try to sell you a package.
